Iran raps about terror attack in Herat, pledges to support Afghan people in fight against terrorism


Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani strongly condemned Friday’s terrorist attack on worshipers at the Gazargh Mosque in Herat.

The spokesperson expressed concern over the continued terrorist attacks in Afghanistan and stressed that the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran will stand with Afghanistan and its oppressed people in their fight against the heinous phenomenon. of extremism, violence and terrorism.

Kanaani further offered his condolences to the families of the victims of the terror attack and wished a speedy recovery to the injured, according to the Foreign Ministry website.

The death toll from the blast outside the I Herat Mosque stands at 18 and 23 injured, Taliban Interior Ministry spokesman Abdul Nafi Takor said.

Among the victims of the explosion in the city of Herat was the famous pro-Taliban cleric Mujib Rahman Ansari who approached the mosque for Friday prayers.

Responsibility for the attack has not been claimed.

According to Herat police spokesman Mahmood Rasoli, “Ansari, along with some of his guards and civilians, were killed as they were heading towards the mosque.”

Expressing his “strong condolences” for Ansari’s death, Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said the perpetrators were the “enemies of religion” and would be punished by the Taliban administration.
