Rihanna is here to save the planet.
On Tuesday, the icon announced that she would be donating $15 million to several climate justice organizations like the Alliance for Climate Justice through her Clara Lionel Foundation. The grants will go to 18 nonprofit organizations that specifically support women and the LGBTQIA2S+ community in the United States and seven Caribbean countries.
“Communities of Color and Island Nations [are] facing the shock of climate change,” the Barbados native continued in a statement shared with the Associated Presswhich she says is a key reason for her decision.
Meanwhile, the Clara Lionel Foundation’s Executive Director, Justine Lucas, added that “funders need to partner with grassroots organizations, recognizing their deep understanding of what is needed to achieve climate justice in their own communities”.
This $15 million pledge is made in partnership with the Twitter co-founder and fellow billionaire Jack Dorseyfrom her own #StartSmall initiative, which Rihanna’s nonprofit charity has worked with in the past, including a grant to help victims of domestic violence in Los Angeles during quarantine.
