Spotlight on Nonprofits: Four Questions for US Gateways

American Gateways provides access to the justice system for low-income immigrants. We serve 23 counties in Central Texas and provide high quality legal representation and accurate information about what is happening in our immigration system.

What is the mission of American Gateways?

Our mission is to uphold the dignity and human rights of immigrants, refugees, and survivors of persecution, torture, conflict, and human trafficking through exceptional free or low-cost immigration legal services. cost, education and advocacy.

What community work are you most proud of?

We take great pride in our ability to give low-income immigrants the access to the justice system they deserve. The high cost of legal representation is a huge barrier that prevents many people from seeking help and seeking the help to which they are entitled. American Gateways removes this barrier. One of the best examples of how we do this work are our legal clinics, which respond to the changing needs of the immigrant community and allow us not only to serve many more people, but also to involve volunteers and organizations partners in our work. Our naturalization clinics have helped nearly 100 people apply for US citizenship in one day. Our next clinic will be May 7 in San Antonio. We’ve also had DACA clinics to help young DREAMers, clinics for those applying for Temporary Protected Status, and most recently an Asylum Clinic to help Afghan families who have moved to the United States.

What upcoming projects are you looking forward to?

We look forward to sharing more about our work and its impact on all of us at our upcoming Immigrant Justice Luncheon this fall. The lunch emphasizes the resilience and strength of the community we serve and recognizes the accomplishments of our staff, volunteers and community members. Visit the events page of our website to learn more about lunch!
