NEW LEBANON – A suspected suicidal woman who was shot dead by a state soldier has been arrested for a felony. Sarah Craddock, 40, was shot in the abdomen on July 15 after pointing a long gun at state police.

The day after the shooting, Craddock was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and threats. She was virtually brought to justice in Greenport City Court.

Craddock was sentenced to Columbia County jail without bail pending discharge from hospital.

Mid-Hudson News reported last week that the soldiers had responded to a residence in New Lebanon where they encountered Craddock, who was reportedly suicidal. As the soldiers attempted to defuse the situation, Craddock raised a long gun and pointed it at the police.

Private Nathaniel Chernewsky fired an explosion from his division-issued shotgun, hitting Craddock in the abdomen. Soldiers provided first aid until medics could transport the woman to Albany Medical Center.

The day after the shooting, Craddock was charged and virtually arraigned in Greenport City Court. She was remanded in Columbia County Jail without bail pending discharge from hospital.
